Let’s get this out of the way. I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions. There, I said it! I’ve never made them, and I don’t plan to start. Why? Because they feel more like a fleeting trend than a meaningful tool for change. Here’s my perspective: If you want real, lasting transformation, small, consistent adjustments over time are much more effective than the flash-in-the-pan enthusiasm of January 1st.
The Key? Deliberate Action and Focused Time.
Instead of resolutions, I recommend setting aside quarterly or bi-monthly “focus time” to check in with yourself:
Assess where you are right now.
Realign your goals to match your priorities.
Identify small, actionable steps to move forward.
Working toward something—whether it’s a big dream or a small win—creates motivation, excitement, and a sense of purpose.
Two Frameworks to Guide Your Goal-Setting Journey:
1. O.A.K.: Clarify Your Goal
This simple framework helps you figure out what you want and how to get there.
Outcome: What is the result you hope to achieve?
Action: What steps are necessary to make it happen?
Knowledge: What’s the gap between where you are now and where you want to be?
2. S.M.A.R.T.: Structure Your Goal
Vague, lofty goals are like trying to hit a target in the dark. Use this framework to give your goals structure and clarity.
Specific: Is my goal clear and precise?
Measurable: How will I know I’ve succeeded?
Achievable: Is this realistic and actionable, or is it just a dream?
Relevant: Does this align with my broader vision?
Time-bound: Set a realistic deadline (1–3 months is a good range) to stay accountable.
Remember - Big changes don’t require grand gestures. Success is built on small, steady steps forward. So, skip the resolutions and embrace deliberate action instead. Your future self will thank you!
If you don’t believe me… here is hard science to back this up!
My goal is to increase my Weekly Wisdom readership and I could use your help. Pass this along or encourage your team to join so that you can discuss these new skills together and grow your leadership culture. Win-win!!! Thank you!
